Makeup in the 60's, like fashion and lots of other things, went wild. If you've seen Love, American Style, or Laugh-In, you've also seen mile-high beehives, minuscule skirts, and piles of bright shadows (often in blue and green), thick mascara and false, furry eyelashes (often worn by the same woman at the same time), and eyebrows that ranged from dense and black to virtually non-existent. The 60's were about the time when mascara started becoming higher in quality. Women wanted gigantic eyes, and makeup that wouldn't run. They were sick of gluing on false lashes which could fall off into the soup when you least expected it. Mascara responded by becoming more user-friendly.
After the 60's, 70's styles seemed downright tame, but looking back from 2004, the 70's still look pretty freakish. Skirts were still tiny, and short-shorts and bikinis made the summertime scene. Polyester made leisure suits a weird part of the masculine wardrobe, and men who weren't even pimps wore gold chains and pinky rings. In makeup, glitter became part of daytime looks, shimmering in slippery lip gloss, sparkling in eye shadows and glimmering up foundations. James Bond movies spanned the 60's and 70's, giving us a timeless look at bizarre fashions and makeup that could be put on with a trowel.
The eighties styles were silk blouses and big shoulder pads, and eye makeup became an important part of the career woman's wardrobe. Maybe because women were trying harder than ever before to smash through the recently-identified glass ceiling, makeup was assertive, almost mask-like. Big jewelry, thick hoop earrings and gold projected the dress-for-success look in the Me-decade. Lined and lipsticked mouths and shadowed, mascaraed eyes competed for attention in faces gessoed smooth with thick foundations. Eyebrows tended to be more real and well-groomed rather than yanked out and drawn on, in keeping with the overall bolder, more "masculine"(natural) look.
Since the nineties, a wide range of looks have become acceptable, perhaps because with the aging of the general population, more women have found the style they'll be staying with for the rest of their lives. Let's face it, at some point, we all choose a look and pretty much stick with it, and women who were in their thirties and forties in the 80's predominate in the population, while younger women experiment with lighter makeup, more casual hairstyles and the smaller trends that wash across the seasons in little waves.
If you look at modern-day stars like Isabella Rossilini, Kate Hudson, Julia Roberts and Julianne Moore, you'll notice that, while makeup enhances their natural looks, it never takes center stage. Lipsticks are a slightly stronger expression of natural lip colors, foundations are muted, and eye makeup draw attention not to itself, but to the eyes. It's not that these women don't wear makeup--they do--it's that the makeup is applied with perfect restraint (and then thoroughly airbrushed, but that’s another story).
If you want to be current with your own eye makeup, spend a lot of time figuring out which colors play up the color and shape of your eyes. Don't fall for trendy colors: you'll just have to buy new ones in a couple of months, and they won't look that great on you anyway. Check out neutral tones in beige, brown and grey, with slightly darker colors for evening. Experiment with mascara, but keep in mind that, contrary to what the ads say, longer and thicker lashes are not necessarily always better-looking. Cows have long, thick lashes too. You want enough lashes to outline your eyes, but not so much that no-one can look away from them.
Eyebrows should be as natural as possible while observing a certain restraint in terms of thickness. If your brows are very pale, you might try a brow pencil, but go gently with it, and get opinions from real and honest friends before taking your new look outside.
As trends have taken us from one extreme to another, finding your own look keeps you from making fashion mistakes that will haunt you in photographs for years to come. 1. Steaming

2. Exfoliate
Uncooked oatmeal and a little warm water make an excellent exfoliant. Mix them together to form a paste and then gently scrub your face to remove dirt, oil, and dead skin cells.
3 . Fruit Facial Mask
A fruity facial mask can be made from a variety of fruits. I like this simple recipe for the papaya.
-1/2 cup yogurt
-1 chopped papaya
-1 juiced lemon
-1 teaspoon of honey
Put all ingredients in the blender and blend on low until a paste is formed. Apply to face and leave on for at least thirty minutes. Got any extra left over? Make a smoothie!

Get Rid Of Pimples

* To stop redness and swelling in an emergency situation (job interview, wedding), ask your doctor for a cortisone injection. It calms down a pimple almost instantly.
* If you can't get to your dermatologist (or needles make you squemish), temporarily reduce redness and swelling by dabbing on a drop of drugstore cortisone cream, Preparation H, or Vasocon-A eyedrops.

Coloring Your Hair

Hair Colors
Coloring your hair is perhaps the quickest and most dramatic way to change your look. It is also an excuse to go out and buy a new wardrobe of clothes, because you'll find that what suited you as a brunette looks rather drab on a new blonde.
There are two types of hair dyes: permanent and semi-permanent, with variations of each.
A) Permanent Tints:
Must be mixed with hydrogen peroxide to lift hair color. The peroxide opens the hair cuticle so that the tint can penetrate the cortex and form the color. The higher the level of peroxide, the quicker and lighter the result.
B) Semi-Permanent Colors:
They don't actually lift the color - you can either vary the tone within your natural highlights or go darker. Quasi-color contains ethanolamine and 3% peroxide which slightly opens the cuticle. This means that the color can last up to 20 washes and will softly fade as you shampoo, causing no regrowth problem.
C) Semi-Permanent Vegetable Colors:
Contain only vegetable extracts and natural ingredients, so no color is stripped from your hair. It is similar to henna but it doesn't coat the hair (adds shine though). This color sits on the hair's surface and will wash out after about 8 shampoos.
Different coloring methods suit different hair styles, so get some expert advice when deciding which one to go for...
Skin Tone: Your new hair color should complement your skin tone. Light-skinned people don't look good with very dark hair because it draws color out of their skin. Dark, tanned skin doesn't look great when mixed with a one-tone blonde, but four or five blonde, chestnut or honey tones look fabulous.
BLONDE:
If you would love to be blonde, talk the process through with your colorist (or stylist) before you go for it. It should be relatively painless on virgin dark brown hair, but if your hair has been permanently tinted then the process will become a long saga.
Never attempt this kind of dye job on your own for the first time.
RED:
Red is the ultimate sexy shade, for color that cries out for attention. Hair holds on to red-toned pigments well, so going copper-top can be easy for most people.
But be warned - if you are blonde you will usually have to go two or three shades darker than your natural color to achieve a rich red (brunette), and it's not easy to reverse it.
BROWN:
Brunette is always a safe choice as it suits nearly every girl in town. Varying the shade with highlights can achieve a huge range of looks. From chocolate brown and bronze shades to honey or dark blonde, combinations of natural tones gives incredible shine as darker-pigmented tints add condition to your hair.
BLACK:
This is by far the easiest color to accomplish because the molecules in black tints are larger and will cover all hair types very effectively. Caution is needed when using black as it only tends to look good on people with darker and olive skin tones. it's great for getting the goth look, but definitely not for your granny.

* Will coloring my hair damage it?
Only if the wrong level of peroxide is used or you are over-processing (too many permanent colors are applied) your hair. If you constantly change your hair color , especially if you go from blonde to brown and back to blonde, you must regularly use deep conditioning treatments.
* Why can colored hair look dull?
Over-processing is the biggest reason. If your hair is starting to look dull, use semi-permanent colors where the pigments sit on top of the hair adding plenty of tone and shine.
* What's better for my hair, semi-permanent or permanent color?
Semi-permanent color give your hair a higher shine and enhance condition, but they won't lift natural hair color. Also, a semi-permanent tint will not cover large amount of grey hair (more than 50%).
If a permanent tint is used correctly, you will always achieve a beautiful effect and semi-permanent tints can be used to maintain these permanent treatments, adding condition.

IT DOES MAKE A DIFFERENCE

In our daily life, we never store any liquid in a container having holes in its base/floor for obvious reasons. Over 70% of our body is made up of water and it might look strange that this huge amount of water is retained in a container (skin) which has millions of holes (pores) in it. The question arises why don’t we get dehydrated by loosing water through our highly porous skin? Allah Almighty with His Great Hikmat (wisdom) has placed a thin layer of oil in the top layers of the skin. The water inside our body is unable to pass through this layer of oil and therefore we don’t loose any significant water through our skin. One can well imagine, what will happen if we loose this all important layer of the oil from our skin?
If you have dry skin, you're likely to experience one or more of the following:
1. In newborn babies, thick scales/crusts on scalp and redness on cheeks/other parts.
2. White patches on face of young children. Please note, these are not due to calcium deficiency.
3. A feeling of tightness or tautness, especially after showering, bathing or swimming.
4. A loss of plumpness, skin appears shrunken or dehydrated, feels and looks rough rather than smooth.
5. Itching that sometimes may be intense.
6. Slight to severe flaking or scaling, fine lines or cracks, severe redness & deep fissures especially on soles/palms which may bleed. The toe webs become itchy, dry & rough due to deposits of chemicals in soaps/shampoos used for bathing.
The nail cuticle is lost and skin around the nail becomes red swollen and painful due to chemicals in soaps and detergents.

FEW MANIFESTATIONS OF DRY SKIN
  
In the following paragraphs, the factors which decrease the oil layer from our skin thus predisposing us to problems related to dry skin shall be described along with the measures for prevention and care of dry skin.
1. Familial/genetically determined dry skin: The dry skin may run in families/genes.
Such people may have problems related to dryness round the year but get worse when exposed to the adverse environmental conditions. If you or a close relative suffer from asthma or nasal allergy, your skin is likely to be more sensitive & dry.
2. Newborn babies: In a significant proportion of newborn babies, the oil producing glands are immature and don’t produce enough oil to meet the requirements of the body. The result is thick scales/crusts on the scalp and red patches on face/body. The solution is regular & frequent (many times a day) oiling of the scalp and skin till the endogenous oil production improves with age reaching to optimum level at puberty.
Use of bubble baths in babies is harmful and results in dry patches on back at a site with maximum contact with chemicals absorbed in the foam layer of bath tub.
3. Old Age: Oil production in the skin decreases in old age. In women the skin gets dry sooner, around menopause but in most men with normal skin, significant dryness is apparent around 60 years of age.
4. Environment/weather: Cold, dry, windy weather conditions as during winters and high altitudes aggravate dryness of the skin. Direct air from the air conditioners/heaters has the same effect. Heating in the homes, absorbs moisture from the room air and causes loss of water from the skin. A general rule is to keep the room temperature between 68F to 75 F and maintain humidity levels between 40-50% by using artificial humidifier. Most people show up the effects of dry skin in winters.
In summers, when the sweat dries out, it leaves behind sweat chemicals on the skin.
This has an irritating and drying effect on the skin. Sitting in the sun for prolonged hours dries out the skin as well.
5. The hands, feet, legs and arms are the most vulnerable parts of the body to suffer from dry skin problems because normally, the skin on these areas has least amount of oil & is subjected to repeated washing and adverse environmental conditions. These parts need more frequent use of moisturizers.
6. Too much 'cleanliness is counterproductive: Frequent washing/showering or bathing, especially if you like your showers hot and your baths long, breaks down the oil barriers in your skin. So does frequent swimming, particularly in heavily chlorinated pools.
7. Repeatedly scratching or rubbing of a body part brings more itching and scratching leading to never ending itch scratch cycle most of the times at subconscious level. The area being repeatedly scratched becomes rough, thick, fissured and may bleed. Such problems happen on easily accessible body parts like legs, hands, arms and neck.
8. The much advertised antiseptic soaps/antibacterial soaps/anti germ soaps are most damaging to the skin & should not be used unless prescribed by a skin specialist. DON’T USE DETTOL SOAP, LIFEBOUY AND SAFEGUARD. In fact, normal skin does not require any antiseptic soap. Perfumed soaps and the ones containing lauryl sulphate are also harmful to the skin. Adding antiseptic lotions to the bathing water or directly applying such stuff on skin should be avoided. Harsh detergents like washing powders, surf, hard soaps for washing clothes should not be applied on the skin. Contact of such agents with the hands especially in housewives results in dryness, itching, chapping and cracking of the skin of the hands. The cuticle of the nails gets damaged and the strong chemicals of the detergents get trapped under the nail fold resulting in pain and swelling of the nail folds. Once the cuticle is damaged, it will take many months for repair that too if further damage from detergents is completely avoided.

9. Always wear rubber gloves up to the elbows or mid forearms while working with detergents and ordinary soaps. At times due to occlusive nature of rubber gloves, the hands sweat and itching increases on wearing gloves. If this is the case, wear a pair of thin cotton gloves under the rubber gloves.
10. Shampoos are harmful to the skin: In people with dry skin, contact of the hands with shampoos is harmful and gloves should be worn while applying shampoo on the scalp. Wash away the shampoo with head leaned forward so that its chemicals don’t run through the rest of the body. Use mild & gentle shampoos 1-2 times weekly so that the skin of your scalp does not dry out.
11. Daily, repeated use of ordinary bathing soaps may also increase dryness of the skin. For dry skin use a gentle, milder, oily soap preferably on alternate days. A general rule of thumb in choosing a suitable soap & Shampoo for your skin/scalp is that the skin should feel soft and smooth instead of being dry, rough & tight after using the soap/shampoo.
12. The best soaps to use: Oily chemical free soaps are the best to use if your skin is extremely dry or people with dry skin want to take bath on daily basis with soaps.
These include: 1) Baby-Aid soap 2) Oilatum soap 3) Dermacare soap. These are available from medical stores only. The baby aid soap casts about Rs 40/- while others are a bit more expensive.
13. Taking bath with too warm/hot water for longer than 10 minutes washes away the natural oil from the skin. Therefore, take a bath/shower with like warm water and that too for 5-10 minutes and never for more than 15 minutes. Taking bath with very cold water especially in winters is not helpful at all.
14. Apply a little oil on wet skin after a bath/shower, followed by gently pat drying the skin with a towel to wipe away excess oil.
15. Choose fabrics your skin loves. Natural fibers such as cotton and silk feel wonderful and allow your skin to breathe, therefore prefer wearing clothes made from these fabrics. The wool, pashmina and cashmere may irritate your skin, however, wearing a cotton underlay with such clothes might be helpful.
16. Washing your clothes: Try to use detergents without dyes or perfumes, both of which can irritate your skin.
17. Keeping the skin well moisturized with regular, frequent and liberal use of moisturizers is the key to prevent and treat dry skin related problems.
18. Which moisturizers to use: There are three types of moisturizers.
a. Oils/Ointments like olive oil, coconut oil, sarsoon oil, Vaseline and petroleum jelly. These are the most effective moisturizers and once applied on the skin, their effect lasts for nearly 8-12 hours depending upon the amount applied. However, these are greasy and many people may not like to use them during the day time.
b. Creams: These have less moisturizing capability than the oils and ointments.
However, these are less greasy and have better cosmetic acceptance. In people with very dry skin, cream based moisturizers may not be sufficient alone and have to be applied once every few hours to be effective.
c. Lotions: Although cosmetically best, the lotions have least moisturizing effects but might be helpful in people with mildly dry skin or in summers when it is difficult to apply oily stuff on the skin. However, Cutawet lotion, Physiogel body lotion and lacticare lotion have better moisturizing capability and can be used if you don’t like greasy stuff on your skin.
d. The best practice is to use an oily/ointment based moisturizer at night time and a cream/lotion based moisturizer applied frequently during the day time.
25. How frequently one should apply the moisturizers: This may range from twice daily to many times in a day depending upon the intensity of the dryness of the skin.
The golden rule is that apply as many times as is required. Whenever, one feels the skin getting tight, rough and itchy, reapply the moisturizer.
26. Diet: Taking oily foods does not help in improving the oiling of the skin.

Fall is a particularly good time to pay attention to cleansing the body. People have cleansed throughout the ages to remove buildup of toxins and impurities in the system which constantly drain our immune systems.
There are countless ways to cleanse, but here is just a sampling of ideas to consider:
1) Digestive Cleansing
One of the most comprehensive ways to rid the body of the accumulated junk (mucous and build-up) in our digestive track. Digestive cleanses may involve fasting, wheatgrass juice, or juicing, cayenne pepper, enemas and colonics. Each of these is intended to assist the body in the process of elimination (particularly the elimination off all the “bad” things we’ve ingested over the years). Often the results of digestive cleansing – after the initial “reaction” stages of headaches or irritability- include feeling more “clear-headed”, lighter, more aware, less fatigued, energized.

2) Skin Brushing / Dry Brush
Brushing your skin with a dry body brush is one of the best ways to clean your skin. It may feel kind of odd but it is more effective than brushing your skin with a wet soapy brush or sponge.

3) Pranayama
Incorporating a breathing practice, with breath retention, and focus on expelling all the air out of the lungs helps invigorate and cleanse the lungs. Many yoga studios offer a pranayama class or incorporate pranayama in their scheduled classes.
4) Tongue Scraping / Tongue Cleaning
Ever notice that slimy white (or sometimes yellow, if you’re sick) film on your tongue? Sounds, gross, I know, but that’s the mouth’s eliminatation system and one of the causes of bad breath (the rest of it is coming from your digestive system). A tongue scraper can be used to scrape off coated tongues first thing in the morning.
5) Detox Bath
Use a combination of epsom salt, sea salt and baking soda to help pull out toxins from the skin (another great way to eliminate toxins). This one can be especially beneficial to ease emotional imbalances.
6) Water Flush
Most of us know that it’s important to stay hydrated and drink lots of water. A Balinese healer gave me another tip…drink 2 liters of warm water first thing in the morning to flush your system.

Get Healthy Glowing Skin, Stay Hydrated


One of the best ways to nourish your skin is to drink plenty of water. Water assists the body with it’s natural elimination process by flushing unwanted toxins out.
Did you know? Crankiness and irritability are some of the first signs that a person is dehydrated. A good thing to tell your sweety next time either one of you gets a little crabby. or better yet, say nothing and just give ‘em a little agua.

The Truth about Stretch Marks

What is a stretch mark?
Stretch marks (or Striae Gravidarum) is a term that refers to the scars on your skin which are caused damage to the elastic fibres that help skin stretch. Stretch marks are perfectly normal, and most women - and even some men - have them!
What do stretch marks look like?
Depending on your skin color, stretch marks start out as pink, reddish brown, brown, or very dark brown streaks. After time they can fade to a more silvery color that�s lighter than your other skin.
Where do they normally happen on your body?
They can happen anywhere on your body, but are most common on hips, breasts and buttocks.
How can I avoid getting stretch marks?
Whether you get them or not is simply a matter of genetics� that is, how elastic your skin is. There�s nothing you can do, so don�t worry about it either way!
Does cream help?
Many women use various types of creams, lotions, and oils to try to prevent stretch marks from forming. Unfortunately, while such products soothe and soften the skin, there is no medical evidence to prove that they actually work! So beware of advertisers trying to sell you expensive products claiming that they prevent stretch marks!
This said, there is some new medical research which shows that some specific creams may be able to help the appearance of stretch marks. Apparently, using 0.1 percent Tretinoin cream (commonly known by the trade name Retin-A) on stretch marks will slightly reduce the length and width of stretch marks.
(N.B. As this is a new development, Tretinoin should not be used during pregnancy or breast feeding).

Laser Therapy
Laser therapy can also help improve the appearance of stretch marks. This is where a surgeon uses different types of lasers, depending on the color of the stretch marks. Traditionally, one type reduces the color of dark stretch marks, the other stimulates the production of pigment-making cells in already faded stretch marks. There is an even newer type of laser therapy that can also be used help the body produce collagen to help restore the elasticity of the skin in depressed stretch marks. This is a very serious and expensive route to follow. You would need to talk your decision through fully with a skin specialist before making a final decision.

What's my Skin Type?

Skin type is something we are born with. Genetics and ethnicity largely determine what kind of skin you will have. Your "type" is generally determined by the amount of oil your sebacious (oil) glands produce. 

An important concept to remember is that you can't change your skin type. While skin can become drier with age, no product will make an oily skin turn dry. Once you determine your skin type, work on maintaining your issues, but understand that there is no one-time fix for any concern!

Dry Skin


Dry skin is characterized by a lack of oil. You will also notice that the pores/follicles look very small. While dry skin typically doesn't get many breakouts, it does require special care because oil helps protect skin from environmental damage and aging. Dry skin tends to showfine lines and wrinkles sooner.
Treat dry skin with a medium to heavy weight moisturizer. It is also important to exfoliate with lactic acid. Not only does lactic acid hydrate the skin...it also helps minimize the appearance of fine lines!

Oily Skin

Oily skin has excess oil production, and a larger pore size all over the face. Breakoutstend to be occassional to quite frequent. This is because oil gets trapped along with debris inside the pores, which can result in blemishes and blackheads.


Treat oily skin with water-based moisturizers and cleansers designed for oily skin.
