What to Do?

  • So depending on the length of your hair take some Shea butter and put it in a bowl.
  • Its easier to apply it when it is liquid so I put it in microwave and melted it. 
  • Make sure its warm NOT hot because this will open up your hair cuticles and the product with be absorbed in hair shaft effectively.
  • Massage it in scalp and apply to the ends. This is like a hot oil treatment and REALLY nourishing for hair.
  • I kept this overnight and washed it away in the morning. 

After my hair was dry I could not stop feeling my hair because it was SUPER SOFT. Like a Miracle!
During the 2nd and 3rd day without washing hair, I noticed that my hair didn't get frizzy at all.
My hair in winter is like a frizz ball sometimes so when I go out in winter I HAVE TO keep my hair up but this week my hair was as soft and un-frizzy as never it had been before.

Extra MMR vaccine helped prevent mumps in outbreak

(Reuters Health) - Giving kids and teens in a New York community a third dose of the measles, mumps, rubella (MMR) vaccine likely helped halt a mumps outbreak in late 2009 and early 2010, according to a new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

U.S. guidelines call for kids to get two doses of the MMR vaccine, one at age 12-15 months and the other at 4-6 years. But as evidence from the Orange County, New York, community shows, mumps can spread in very close quarters even when most young people have received both recommended doses.

The study covers a mumps outbreak in the Orthodox Jewish community, which researchers say began at a religious camp in the Catskill Mountains and was spread by a method of schooling involving close one-on-one contact between study partners, known as chavrusas (see Reuters Health story of October 31, 2012).

In September through December 2009, the outbreak sickened close to 400 people in one Orange County village and was concentrated at three local schools.

"Most of these outbreaks of mumps occur in very crowded settings," said Dr. Preeta Kutty, a CDC researcher who worked on the report.

"Although the majority of the children (who got mumps) had received two doses of the vaccine, the intensity of exposure overcame that protection," she told Reuters Health.

Because it can take a few days for mumps to cause symptoms, Kutty said infected students may have been exposing their study partners without knowing they were sick.

When other outbreak-control methods such as isolating sick children failed, public health workers stepped in and offered village students in grades 6 through 12 a third dose of the MMR vaccine in January and February 2010.

In their report on that intervention, Kutty and her colleagues found the rate of new mumps attacks in that age group dropped from almost 5 percent of kids in the three weeks before vaccination to 0.13 percent a few weeks after the extra doses were given.

Village-wide, mumps attacks fell from 0.86 percent to 0.21 percent, the research team reported Monday in Pediatrics.

The most common vaccine side effects were redness and swelling from the shot and achy joints and muscles.

Mumps is caused by a contagious virus that leads to swelling of the salivary glands and other common symptoms, such as fever, headache and tiredness. Complications of a mumps infection include inflammation in the brain, testicles or ovaries.

Kutty said even among people in the New York village who didn't get a booster dose of the MMR vaccine, so-called "herd immunity" likely kept them protected. Out of 2,178 students who had already received two doses of the vaccine, more than 80 percent chose to receive a third during the outbreak.

Still, the researchers can't prove the vaccine was responsible for the drop-off in mumps cases. It's always possible the outbreak had already hit its peak and was on the decline anyway.

They emphasized that the study doesn't mean everyone should get a third dose of the MMR vaccine. But in outbreaks, booster shots could be one tool when other infection-control strategies fail, they said.

"We have learned that providing a third dose may be effective in stopping an outbreak," Kutty said.

Dr. Saad Omer, from the Emory Vaccine Center in Atlanta, said that's an important lesson for dealing with future mumps outbreaks, both in the U.S. and elsewhere.

"The vaccine is so safe and the evidence is very reasonable now," Omer, who wasn't involved in the new study, told Reuters Health. "I think (a third vaccine) should be on the list of first-line options for decent-sized outbreaks."

Mumps outbreaks are most common in crowded settings such as college dorms and prisons, he added. So the recent outbreak in religious schools "is not all that unique."

Pediatrician and vaccine researcher Dr. Amanda Dempsey from the University of Colorado Denver said the Orange County outbreak was probably due to a combination of big families and crowded schools as well as lack of 100-percent MMR vaccine coverage.

She, as well as the study's authors, said the report also highlights the importance of following vaccination recommendations in early childhood.

The boy who first introduced mumps into the Catskill Mountain camp had himself contracted the disease during an outbreak in England, where concerns over vaccine safety had led to low vaccination rates. The boy had previously received the standard two doses of mumps vaccine.

"The main way that vaccine-preventable diseases get propagated is through people who aren't fully vaccinated," Dempsey told Reuters Health. "Even small drops in vaccine coverage can have major implications."

Too Much Sitting Linked to Fat Buildup Around the Heart

(HealthDay News) — All those hours Americans spend in their office chairs or on their sofas may be packing on a particularly unhealthy form of fat around the heart, a new study suggests.

What’s more, the fat stayed in place even when people undertook regular exercise, according to a study reported this week in Los Angeles at the annual meeting of the American Heart Association.

CT scans of more than 500 older Americans found that excess time spent sitting “was significantly related to pericardial fat around your heart,” said study lead author Britta Larsen, a postdoctoral researcher in the department of cardiovascular epidemiology at the University of California, San Diego.

There have been numerous large studies recently suggesting that when it comes to its deleterious health effects, sitting is not just the absence of physical activity — it has effects on the body that go beyond lack of exercise.

According to Larsen, that means that “even if you run every day but then you sit for eight hours a day, the sitting is still doing something bad for your health.” She also noted that studies have found sitting to be detrimental to health even after scientists factored out excess weight gain.

“So, we wanted to see if sitting was related to the distribution of fat, because different types of fat are worse than others,” Larsen said.

The study looked at data on 504 Californian adults, average age 65. In particular, Larsen’s team examined CT scan data that showed how much of certain types of body fat were deposited in each participant’s body.

“We looked at subcutaneous fat, which is stuff on the outside [for example, a "pot belly"]; then visceral fat, which is around your organs; intramuscular fat, which is actually in your muscles; intrathoracic [chest cavity] fat; and pericardial fat, which is around your heart,” Larsen said.

The participants were also asked about the amount of time per week they spent sitting and how much time they had spent being physically active.

The study found that the more time spent sitting, the bigger the area of fat deposited around a person’s heart, Larsen said. She explained that pericardial fat “is strongly related to cardiovascular disease. It gets in the way of heart function, it clogs up your arteries — you don’t want it there.”

Prolonged sitting was not significantly related to any of the other types of fat, the study found.

There was also bad news for people who sit a lot but assume that they can exercise away all that pericardial fat. According to the study, regular exercise was not related to a lessening of pericardial fat, although it did help reduce visceral fat around the organs, which is strongly tied to diabetes and metabolic disease.

All of this means that for people who want to prevent the buildup of unhealthy fat deposits, exercise may not be enough.

The study “really emphasizes that [sitting and exercise] are two distinct behaviors,” Larsen explained. “In order to really be healthy you need to focus on both — get enough exercise but also not sit for 10 hours per day like most of us do.”

She agreed that is probably a tall order for millions of office-bound Americans. Still, simple innovations, such as “standing desks,” or getting up for a stroll every hour or two at work can help mitigate sitting’s effects.

“Sitting really is bad for your heart,” Larsen said. “So we are hoping that the workplace, especially, becomes more standup-friendly.”

One expert said the study raises interesting issues, but it’s too early to link sitting with heart disease and heart attack.

“Other studies have indicated that pericardial fat is associated with cholesterol blockages, particularly in people who are less obese,” noted Dr. Stephen Green, associate chairman in the department of cardiology at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, N.Y.

However, he added, “in this study there was no direct linkage between sitting and heart attacks, or sitting and cholesterol blockages.”

Study author Larsen also stressed that the study could only point to an association between sitting and pericardial fat, it could not prove a cause-and-effect relationship.

Dr. Sripal Bangalore, an assistant professor of medicine at NYU School of Medicine in New York City, added that the study may help unravel the mystery of why a “couch potato” lifestyle is so unhealthy.

“The current study shows that a sedentary lifestyle may have a differential increase in fat accumulation based on activity level,” he said. “It is very intriguing and should be confirmed in future studies,” Bangalore added.

“I guess until that time, it is time to sit less and be more active,” said Bangalore, who is also director of research at the Cardiovascular Outcomes Group at NYU Langone Medical Center.

Findings presented at medical meetings are typically considered preliminary until published in a peer-reviewed journal.

Vitamin D deficiency in teens a serious problem



Does your teenage daughter often complain of backache and joint pain? Is your college-going cousin always lethargic? Vitamin D deficiency among youngsters, which causes such problems, is becoming common these days and is a growing health concern, doctors say.

Vikas Ahluwalia, senior consultant of Internal Medicine at Max Super Specialty hospital, said that vitamin D deficiency among young people has increased over the last couple of years, especially in metros like Delhi.

"We have observed a rising number of cases of young people coming with complaints like backache, leg pain, joint pain and lethargy, which relate to vitamin D and vitamin D3 deficiency. It's a cause of concern," Ahluwalia said.

The trend is mostly seen in metros, like Delhi, he added.

"What is even more worrying is that children as young as 16, who are in the growing stage of their life, are coming with such problems," Ahluwalia said.

Paediatrician Anju Virmani of the Indraprastha Apollo hospital agreed.

"Vitamin D deficiency is becoming very common these days, and it's affecting different sets of population. Among kids too it is becoming common," Virmani said.

"Scientific studies show that vitamin D deficiency is increasing in each decade. So the deficiency in the population between 2000 and 2010 was more than the previous decade. And the urban population is more affected than its rural counterpart," she added.

The root cause of the problem is lifestyle-related, doctors say.

"It starts right at the beginning - when a woman is pregnant. If she is low on vitamin D, so will the child be. If there is not enough breastfeeding, the child will have this and all sorts of other problems when he or she grows older," Virmani said.

Young office goers, in their twenties and early thirties, who mostly have desk jobs and work in air-conditioned offices, also come with similar complaints.

"I remember one patient who came to us with a fracture. She was married for just six months and we were concerned if it had to do with domestic abuse. But after two days, her other leg too had a fracture, removing our doubts, because it meant that her bones were very brittle because of vitamin D deficiency," she added.

Exposure to sunlight is the biggest source of vitamin D - something that we consciously avoid under various pretexts.

"We are a nation obsessed with fair skin although we are naturally blessed with more melanin which is meant to protect, unlike our Western counterparts who also have higher incidence of skin cancer. So people here put lots and lots of sunscreen and sit behind tinted glasses that blocks UV rays. This is not always healthy," said Ashu Agarwal, consultant in internal medicine at a private hospital in Delhi.

Pollution too blocks the sun's rays, she added.

"Children these days hardly play outside. They are running from school to tuitions and then when they play, it's mostly video games in their rooms. So there is not enough exposure to sunlight," Ahluwalia said.

"Also, the common trend in all the kids with vitamin D deficiency is that they don't take milk or milk products. So where do you get your calcium? Fast food has added to the problem. The normal range of vitamin D is 30 (nanogrammes per millilitre of blood) and at times we get children with 3-4; so that's how severe the problem can get," he added.

Virmani advises parents not to encourage their children, especially their young daughters who are more conscious about their weight, to have low fat milk. "It hardly does any good and doesn't slim you down," Virmani said.

"The good thing is that tests for vitamin D are easily available and more reliable nowadays, so you can keep a check on it by maintaining a healthy lifestyle and ensure that your children do too. Ultimately your health is in your hands," Agarwal said.
